On May 15, board member Rob Case spent the day meticulously dismantling the chimney at First Zion.  The chimney, a later addition to the building to exhaust the oil burning furnace in the basement, was leaning precariously and threatened to fall.  Brick by brick, Rob lowered the chimney below the roof line in preparation for a new roof later this summer.  A team of about a dozen gathered late in the afternoon to admire Rob’s work and to sort and arrange the individual bricks – saving them for a future landscaping project on the site.  If you’d like to volunteer to help with the restoration of First Zion, write to us at volunteer@historicharpersferry.org.
