We aim to protect and preserve African American heritage in our towns by rehabilitating the First Zion Baptist Church building as a historic and cultural landmark. Built in 1894 in a predominantly African-American neighborhood, the church was a central meeting place for the local black community that developed alongside Storer College (1867-1955). With this project we will strive to share and celebrate the cultural contributions of the African American community in our towns. We hope to ensure economic sustainability for this work by providing a secular space for educational and artistic programs and exhibits that are open to all.
