Alfred “Al” Alsdorf, founding chair of the Harpers Ferry-Bolivar Historic Town Foundation and a tireless advocate for the preservation and vitality of the community, passed away on January 19, 2026, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to shape the towns for generations.
The Foundation itself was created in 2003 by Jim Addy. At that time, Al was leading the local Main Street group. Recognizing that Harpers Ferry was too small to continue effectively in that program, Al suggested that their efforts be redirected into the new Foundation. From that point forward, Jim and Al worked closely together, with Al quickly becoming the driving force behind the organization’s development and growth as Jim stepped into the role of Mayor.
Al was instrumental in building the Foundation into a strong and active nonprofit. From its earliest days, he devoted his time, energy, and talents to ensuring that Harpers Ferry remained a vibrant, welcoming, and historically meaningful place. He believed deeply in the power of community and the importance of preserving the character of the town he loved.
Working alongside Don Alexander, Al spearheaded the effort to raise funds for the streetscape improvements along Potomac Street in the business district. Their leadership and determination helped transform the area, strengthening the local economy while honoring its historic setting. The results of that work continue to benefit residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
A gifted craftsman, Al contributed not only his ideas but also his hands-on skills. He frequently framed artwork for Foundation fundraisers, adding a personal touch to events that supported the organization’s mission.
Al’s generosity, creativity, and civic spirit left a lasting imprint on the community. He will be remembered as a builder in every sense of the word: a builder of organizations, of projects, of relationships, and of the physical spaces that define the town he loved.
He will be deeply missed by friends, colleagues, and all who value the heritage and future of Harpers Ferry and Bolivar.
